Caldwell has officially launched their auxiliary police force. Last night, the Caldwell council welcomed this new safety-force to town, and now you will be seeing these men and one woman patrol the downtown.

These officers participated in a special training program in Cedar Grove, and will not carry weapons. The program lasted 12 weeks, and readied these volunteers for work in the borough.

Their focus will be on public events, any public safety emergencies and patrolling the streets.

Expect to see their official public introduction at the Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 27.

This idea was born last year, when former Caldwell council president Peter Murray worked with Caldwell police chief James Bongiorno in an effort to add police without adding cost to the budget.

Updates to follow.
