Geese no match for Nutley Commissioner Mauro Tucci

The problems begin when the numbers of non-migrating birds

increase, including:

- overgrazing of turfgrass, which

impacts aesthetics and creates an

erosion hazard

- grazing of cropland, increasing

erosion hazard and crop losses

- accumulations of fecal material

on land, creating a health risk

- degraded water quality, from

fecal bacteria and elevated

nitrogen and phosphorous

- hazards to aircraft at airports

- attacks on humans

Commissioner Mauro G. Tucci has announced a new management strategy to address the increasing geese population in Nutley. As we near the heart of summer more and more people head outdoors to enjoy our beautiful park system and are frustrated with the geese feces that predominantly affects our park areas. In an effort to take action and control this growing concern Commission Tucci has called in the experts “Geese Chasers” to assist. “This program gives us great flexibility with an on-call service in addition to a scheduled maintenance program. This allows us to identify specific time frames when the service will be most effective” stated Tucci.

There are a handful of methods currently used by organizations suffering from "resident Canada Goose" population. Only one has proven to be successful. Many have tried scarecrows, flags, mylar tape and balloons. Others have tried pop guns, noise makers, fencing, and sound machines. Some have even applied chemicals to the turf. None of these provide an effective, natural and long-lasting solution. Only the use of highly trained handlers and Border Collies will control the Canada Goose problem year-round.

The Border Collie is a breed of herding dogs that were reared by shepherds in the border country between Scotland and England starting in the 1700s. They have an inbred ability to stalk and herd. When confronting geese, Border Collies will crouch, stalk and present a menacing "wolf-like" gaze. The Canada Goose will be convinced there is a predator approaching and that the property is unsafe. Amazingly, the Border Collie will never come into contact with Canada Geese; bringing no harm to them, to children or to anyone present. In fact, Border Collies are among the smartest, friendliest dogs you can find. “Our goal is to humanely reduce and ultimately relocate these geese from our community” stated Commissioner Mauro G. Tucci.
