In the middle of a recession, with newspapers all around the world closing, and the press scrambling in panic, it seemed like a good time to start a newspaper.

Really.

If there is anything I’ve learned over the course of my life, it’s that we need to have some kind of forum where we can all speak our minds, put forth our ideas, and in some cases, try to change the status quo.

This is why thejerseytomatopress.com was created.

In a world of instant messaging and twittering, why can’t we have a local newspaper online that is truly a newspaper? And why can’t that paper offer readers stories written in the very best journalistic standards – along with a true balance of both sides of an issue?

As I watched more and more publications fold, I realized that my beloved world of newspapers was not ending.

Instead, like many other facets of modern life, the world of journalism is experiencing a seismic shift.

I have worked as a reporter for local newspapers in West Orange, South Orange, Maplewood, Glen Ridge and Bloomfield, with occasional stints in Caldwell.

But no matter where I have gone to unearth a story, there has always been one constant – there are countless stories to be told, and to be written, in every location.

Whether it is the story of a woman celebrating her 100^th birthday with her family, or the reaction of a child as she uses a Smart Board for the first time, these stories are a poignant and fragile web that connects all of us to one another.

This paper is meant to be a local, daily chronicle for your town.

As we grow, we may miss something.

If so, let us know.

We want to cover it all – without exploiting anyone.

And, if you want a good sale, or a place to hear music or see a show, or a great meal, we want to provide you with a comprehensive list.

If we miss something, let us know.

And if we open your eyes to a sliver of Montclair and the Caldwells you may not have noticed before, well, we’ve done our job just fine.
