With on-duty law enforcement on heighten alert due to increased, yet unspecified, federal monitoring of ISIS threats to Americans, an off-duty Essex County sheriff’s volunteer deputy saved the life of an elderly male at a local restaurant.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that Deputy Chris Cannon and his family and friends were waiting for a table shortly before 7:00 p.m. this evening when they were alerted that a late 60-year-old male diner was suffering choke symptoms at Franklin Steak House on Passaic Avenue.

“Restaurant employees attempted to relieve the choking symptoms but were unsuccessful,” Sheriff Fontoura noted. “Fortunately, Deputy Christopher Cannon was on location and successfully administered the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the food particles that were obstructing the victim’s air passages.”

Fairfield police and EMT teams arrived on the scene a few moments later and the victim is expected to make a full recovery.
