BREAKING NEWS:

DEMOCRAT COUNCIL candidate Stephen Modica, 47, was arrested this evening for possession of drugs - marijuana; also for possessing drug paraphernalia.

All suspects in any arrest are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Modica was charged with possession of marijuana and also being within 1,000 feet of a school.

He was recently wholeheartedly supported and celebrated as one of two write-in Democrat candidates for Caldwell council, with write-in candidate Edward Durkin.

Both write-in candidates had enough votes on the ballot to put them officially in the running for the 2 open seats held by incumbent candidates Republicans Peter Murray and Rich Hauser. Modica had 63 write-in votes, well over the 25 minimum.

Former Democrat Caldwell councilman Jeff Curley was very vocal in the press with his personal and local party endorsement for Modica only last week.

Published on June 6 in the AOL Patch, written by local reporter Teresa Akerson, Curley, the Democratic Committee Chair, said "We are happy the party has nominated two outstanding candidates who are eager to face the voters of Caldwell in the fall election.”

Now, with this arrest, whether Modica can stay in the race is in question. He received 63 write-in votes for his efforts last Tuesday during the Primary election, well over the minimum which is 25.

Due to the late hour no other specifics are available.

Updates to follow.
