Weds. is Free MATINEE Day in Montclair - at MPL

On Wednesdays at 2 p.m., Montclair Public Library hosts The Every Wednesday Matinee, a classic film series presented in its auditorium. In conjunction with the library’s Summer Reading program, films related to Build a Better World will be screened.

Crossfire (July 5) – Starring Robert Young, Robert Mitchum and Robert Ryan. Film-noir account of four GIs who get involved in the murder of a Jewish Army veteran. The film, a Best Picture nominee, is one of the first major-studio efforts to confront anti-Semitism.(1947, 86 minutes, B&W)

The Fountainhead (July 12) – Starring Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal and Raymond Massey. Ayn Rand’s portrait of an uncompromising, visionary architect struggles to maintain his integrity and individualism despite personal, professional and economic pressures to conform to popular standards. (1949, 114 minutes, B&W)

Blackboard Jungle (July 19) – Starring Glenn Ford, Anne Francis and Louis Calhern. An early film study of teens gone wild details the efforts of an idealistic and dedicated teacher trying to cope with his incorrigible students. (1955, 101 minutes, B&W)

Bad Day at Black Rock (July 26) – Starring Spencer Tracy, Robert Ryan and Anne Francis. A one-armed WWII vet shows up in a small Southwestern town but gets a chilly reception and becomes endangered when the locals discover what it is he’s seeking. (1955, 81 minutes, Color)
