Today is Holocaust Memorial Day

Posted

January 27th, 1945 is the day Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp was liberated by the Red Army.

Today the entire world remembers the evil of the Holocaust, and remembers the over 6 million Jews murdered by Nazis. Two thirds of the world's Jewish population was totally wiped out, and among the killed were over1.6 million children.

Though painful to remember, today is a day to always mark as a reminder of how evil swept the world in its violent grasp between 1941 - 1945. To remember the Holocaust is not just a time for prayer or meditation, however: it is most surely a time to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

Other people killed by Nazis during this time included people with disabilities, minorities and anyone who dared to fight against the murderous regime.

As President Theodore Roosevelt said, “I believe that the more you know about the past, the better you are prepared for the future.”

Around the globe today, there are many massacres ongoing. Today, we must all recognize this horrific day, and do our part to make the planet a safe place for everyone. No matter how small your part is, it will matter.
