The Montclair Public Library’s popular photography and art exhibits series continues with Masai Warriors Display a Collaboration between Media Specialist, Linda Hartman and art sculpture teacher at Glen Rock High School, Glen Rock, NJ and her amazing 9-12 grade students. The exhibit will be on view in the Montclair Public Library glass cases on the first floor, 50 South Fullerton Avenue, during library hours from January 2 through January 30, 2018.

Linda Hartman is a resident of Montclair, NJ. and Media Specialist at Glen Rock High School, Glen Rock, NJ.

Her inspiration for the project was a trip Hartman took to Tanzania and a day and night she spent at a Masai village. Hartman was so taken by their lifestyle, their kindness and their welcoming culture.

As a guest in their village she observed a typical day with them, attended a kindergarten-level class and talked many hours with them about the Masai life and culture.

Linda Hartman initiated a collaboration with the sculpture teacher and her class of students from grades 9-12 at her high school. She gave a presentation to the class, showing her photos and videos. The students were so enthusiastic and excited to learn about this primitive culture that still exists in the 21st century. That was Hartman’s goal.

These remarkable students had never created individual images using clay. Hartman remarked that their attention to detail and the uniqueness of each piece was astounding. Blending the historical and artistic perspectives with their own artistic expressions really created a meaningful experience for the students. Having them realize what they were capable of doing and exposing them to different worlds was what this collaboration was all about.

Take time out of your day to visit this exhibit and you will be delighted by the uniqueness of each sculpture.

The Library welcomes inquiries from local artists and arts organizations regarding use of the exhibit space. For further information, please contact the Montclair Public Library (973) 744-0500 ext. 2221.
