Summer Of Hell for Commuters Begins Today

The daily onslaught of train delays and cancellations hits commuters today, July10, and commuters from New Jersey, Long Island, Conn. and within NYC are in for a tough summer.
Penn Station MTA Chairman Joe Hota warned the thousands of daily commuters they will be facing facing long train arrivals, delays and cancellations due to the hub’s ongoing repairs, which has created derailments and sewage leakages numerous times in the past few months.
His advice is to take an earlier train than usual, and that the systems they used to work after Hurricane Sandy would be in place once again.
There is a 20 percent reduction in train lines through September 1. This impacts 7,400 daily NJ Transit riders and all of the commuters on the Morris & Essex Line must now transfer in Hoboken every weekday after 7 AM, forgoing their formerly simple commute of going right into Midtown. This diversion alone will cost commuters an additional 35-45 minutes in travel time.
Path is cross-honoring all NJ Transit tickets at the World Trade Station, 33rd St., and Hoboken.
6 regional Northeast service trains between NY and Washington are cancelled until the work is complete.
Once you are in NYC, your hellish summer of travel is not over. The New York City subway line is crumbling, and a recent report noted that more than 70 percent of subway riders experienced “significant” delays 50 percent of the time, with one in seven straphangers saying it was "always".
Workers in the city are now often late for their jobs, which 74 percent of subway riders reporting they were late for work or meetings. 22 percent were late for job interviews. And, 2 percent reported being fired for tardiness.
