Ronald J. Meyers, retired English professor from East Stroudsburg University (PA), will present a slide-lecture entitled “Shakespeare’s Politics in Relationship to Today” on Thursday, November 29 at 6:30 pm in the Community Room of the West Caldwell Public Library, 30 Clinton Road.

What did Shakespeare, a Monarchist, have to say about the rights of subjects as opposed to the Divine Right of Kings? Meyers will discuss how Shakespeare believed that the people had freedoms that should be defended. He rendered these concerns in his prolific plays, especially in dramas like "Macbeth," "Hamlet," and "Othello" as well as his history plays such as "Richard II" and III, "Henry IV," "King John," "Antony and Cleopatra," and "Julius Caesar." This lecture will present the historical context dating back to King Henry VIII, Machiavelli, Queen Elizabeth I and King James.

This program is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. To sign-up, call the Library at 973-226-5441 or sign-up online at http://tinyurl.com/WCPL-Events.
