The Board of Governors of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, approved tuition and fee increases of 1.85 percent for the 2017-2018 academic year for in-state undergraduate students.

“Rutgers is committed to providing our students with the highest quality education,” said Sandy J. Stewart, chair of the Board of Governors. “Once again the university has been able to keep tuition and fee increases to a minimum while maintaining the top academic programs that Rutgers offers to New Jersey’s brightest students.”

Today’s action continues Rutgers’ trend of modest cost increases at the state’s largest and most comprehensive higher education provider. This year’s increase of 1.85 percent is below the university’s 2.1 percent average tuition and mandatory fee increases of the last three years.

“Public colleges and universities across the country are facing significant financial challenges,” said Robert Barchi, university president. “I am proud that Rutgers has been able to keep these cost increases to a minimum while continuing its commitment to teaching, research and service.”

As a result of today’s action, a typical in-state, full-time Arts and Sciences undergraduate at Rutgers University-New Brunswick will be billed $14,638 in combined tuition and mandatory student fees in 2017-2018, an increase of 1.85 percent. For such a student living on campus, total charges (tuition, fees, room and board) will increase to $27,090, up 1.7 percent from last year.

Rates will increase by similar percentages for typical Arts and Sciences undergraduates at Rutgers University-Camden, to $14,501 for tuition and fees and, for those living on campus, to $26,594 for total charges, and at Rutgers University-Newark, to $14,085 and $27,349.

Specific tuition, fee, room and board charges at Rutgers vary across the university’s colleges and schools. While the 1.85 percent increase is for most undergraduates at Rutgers, in many cases, individual student costs are reduced by federal, state or institutional financial aid.

Tuition increases at Rutgers, with a $4.39 billion budget in 2017-2018, are driven by increasing expenditures, primarily personnel salaries, and moderated by any increased appropriations in the annual state budget.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a leading national research university and the state of New Jersey’s preeminent, comprehensive public institution of higher education.
