The Montclair Public Library’s popular Montclair Organization Display series continues with Montclair African-American Heritage Foundation Display. The exhibit will be on view in the Montclair Public Library glass cases on the first floor, 50 South Fullerton Avenue, during library hours from June 1 through June 29, 2018.

The Montclair African-American Heritage Parade and Festival was born in 1990 by a group of concerned residents under the leadership of Councilwoman, Audrey Fletcher. At that time the focus of the group was to produce an annual parade and festival to commemorate and celebrate the positive achievements of African Americans in the greater Essex County area.

The traditional event is always highly anticipated and draws many current and former Montclair residents. The annual parade and festivities take place the first weekend in June. This year the date is June 2, 2018. The event draws current residents, and residents living out of state.

In 2012, the name was officially changed to the Montclair African American Heritage Foundation, Inc. (MAAHF). The name change, was a result of a new direction and focus of the organization.

On Friday evening “Memories” – this is an informal reunion at Montclair High School where current and previous residents get together to meet and re-connect. On Saturday morning there is the high energy, colorful parade, ending at Nishuane Park where the festivities begin and are reflective of the pride of the African American culture. This event is a family affair where there is great music, dancing, great food, and games for the children and you can dance to your hearts content.

It is very important to note that MAAHF has transitioned into much more than the parade and festival. MAAHF provides scholarships, cultural activities and public education to the community.

The Library welcomes inquiries from local artists and arts organizations regarding use of the exhibit space. For further information, please contact the Montclair Public Library (973) 744-0500 ext. 2221.
