MPL Hosts Live Webcast with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael Schmidt

Michael Schmidt will speak with journalist Jay Schreiber about his incendiary New York Times bestseller, “Donald Trump v. The United States: Inside the Struggle to Stop a President.”

On Sunday, October 4, 2020, at 4 p.m., the Montclair Public Library will be hosting Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael Schmidt in conversation with journalist Jay Schreiber about his incendiary New York Times bestseller, “Donald Trump v. The United States: Inside the Struggle to Stop a President.”

This event is the second in our Fall 2020 season of Open Book / Open Mind Online, a live webcast version of our popular, long-running literary conversation series. After the discussion, audience members will participate in a virtual Q&A session with the author.

Michael S. Schmidt is a Washington correspondent for the New York Times who covers national security and federal investigations. He was part of two teams that won Pulitzer Prizes in 2018 — one for reporting on workplace sexual harassment issues and the other for coverage of President Donald Trump and his campaign’s ties to Russia. Michael has broken several high profile stories. Among them was that former F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, wrote a series of memos on how the president asked for his loyalty and tried to interfere with the F.B.I.'s investigations. Mr. Mueller was appointed after those disclosures.

Michael was first to reveal the fact that Hillary Clinton exclusively relied on a personal email account when she was secretary of state. In 2017, Michael co-authored the stories that outlined how the former Fox News host, Bill O'Reilly, paid off a series of women who made sexual harassment allegations against him. He started his career at the Times in 2005 as a clerk on the foreign desk.

Here are some reviews of the masterful author:

“The Pulitzer-winning New York Times reporter chronicles what he has seen from his ‘front-row seat’ [on the White House]….a masterful and alarming account of ‘the struggle to stop a president’.”–The Guardian

“Michael S. Schmidt’s “Donald Trump v. The United States” tells the dramatic, high-stakes story of those who felt compelled to confront and try to contain the most powerful man in the world as he shredded norms and sought to expand his power….MPL/OBOM/Schmidt 10/4/20

Drawing on secret FBI and White House documents and confidential sources inside federal law enforcement and the West Wing, “Donald Trump v. The United States” is vital journalism, recording the shocking reality of a presidency like no other, a riveting contemporary history, and a lasting account of just how fragile and vulnerable the institutions of American democracy really are.”--Random House

ABOUT THE CONVERSATION PARTNER Jay Schreiber was a New York Times editor for 27 years, working with top reporters including Michael Schmidt. He is a longtime resident of Montclair.
