Free Healthy Lunch for Kids @ The Library

Look for this summer’s Free HEALTHY Lunch Program at the Montclair Public Library. Drop into the Library café area Mondays through Fridays and pick up a brown-bag lunch. Free to kids 17 and under. In partnership with Toni's Kitchen and Partners for Health Foundation. Supplies are limited. Please note that we cannot accommodate special diets or food allergen restrictions.

June 25 to August 31*, 12pm-2pm

*The library is closed on Independence Day, July 4.

Fade to Books: Free Haircuts for Young Readers

Marc Williams (of Young’s World of Beauty, 307 Orange Rd # A, Montclair), and Mahir Abdul-Hakim (of Mahir’s Unisex Barbershop, 320 Orange Rd, Montclair), are offering to cut young readers’ hair for free if they read a book out-loud during their haircut. Just go to either barbershop during listed hours and tell your barber you’re ready to read.

Participating kids will also get to enter MPL’s monthly drawing for Movie Tickets, Comics, Books & other prizes! We are very grateful to East Side Mags and watchung booksellers for donating raffle prizes.

Beginning Chess for Kids with Jaron Bernard

Enjoy an introduction to chess for kids with Jaron Bernard. Chess requires concentration and planning, and can improve academic skills. Kids will be taught moves, strategies, notation, etiquette and sportsmanship. Ample time will be allowed for free play at the end of each class. Jaron Bernard is president of the Montclair High School Chess Club and a veteran of over 100 tournaments. Rated in the top 5% of tournament players in the US, he has had many successes including winning one of two Best Game prizes at the 2017 New Jersey Open. Jaron has taught in groups and one-on-one settings with Chess for Life, Mathnasium, and assisted Sean Finn at Montclair Learning Center. He currently studies with International Grandmaster and NJ State Champion Mackenzie Molner.

The Life of Mozart: A Traveling Lantern Theatre Company Show

Experience The Life of Mozart as presented by Traveling Lantern Theatre Company! A frolicsome, gleeful and historically accurate play about one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived. From start to finish this show is accompanied by Mozart's breathtaking music. This play is especially designed to introduce young children to the vibrancy of history, the joy of music, and the true story of this very special composer's life. Traveling Lantern has been educating and entertaining children nationwide since 1985. Their mission is to bring great stories to children, to draw them into an active theater experience, to excite their minds and to tickle their imaginations. Please note that filming during the show from any device will not be allowed; by registering for and attending you agree to not film any portion of this event.

Young Scotty is new in town and wants to make friends, when the town’s best baseball player Benny takes him under his wing. When Benny has a dream with Babe Ruth telling him to go over the fence to get the ball, he decides to face his fears - and a very mean dog. Rated PG.

Summer at the Library Teen Volunteer Orientations

Summer at the Library is just around the corner! Montclair Public Library invites Montclair High School students (and residents of Montclair attending other schools) ages 14 and older to participate in the library’s summer volunteer program. Teens must attend one (1) of the three (3) orientation dates.* Interested teens will have the opportunity to sign up for volunteer positions, as well as learn about the library’s summer programming. Orientations will be held on the 3rd floor; register online. Volunteer positions are limited so register early!

Teen Documentary Screening: War Dance

War Dance is produced by Shine Global and chronicles the stories of Dominic, Rose, and Nancy, three Ugandan refugee children whose lives are torn apart by war. Residents of the Patongo refugee camp, the children prepare to take part in a nationwide music and dance competition. There will be a short discussion after the film. Rated PG-13.

Car Class with Becca

Car Class with Becca is for men, women, and young adults. The class goes over a typical inspection sheet that you would receive when you bring your vehicle in for service. As we go over the inspection sheet, you learn how to properly maintain your car and what services to avoid. You will learn how to extend the life of your car and how to save money on maintenance and extra repairs. You will learn how your car works, from the four strokes of an engine, to basic brake mechanics, to suspension set ups. As a result, you leave feeling empowered, full of knowledge that will help you be a better consumer. The class will also teach you how to change your tire and safely jump-start your car.
