Caldwell Merchants Association Sponsors a Safe Halloween

Caldwell, NJ -- The Caldwell Merchants Association will once again sponsor a Safe Halloween on Friday, October 29, 2010 throughout the Caldwell downtown. Many shop owners and businesses on Bloomfield Ave and Smull Ave. will be handing out candy and assorted treats or trick-or-treaters from early afternoon until closing.

“We have received so many requests from parents to continue this tradition, because it is a very safe way for children to dress up and be with their friends and collect candy and treats on this festive day,” stated June Cowell, CMA President.

The CMA also wishes to offer the following tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics to parents, to keep in mind when planning the events of the day:

• Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure shoes fit well and costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame.

• Consider using reflective tape or striping to costumes and Trick-or-Treat bas for greater visibility.

• Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives.

• When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories, look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant.

• If a sword, cane or stick is a part of your child’s costume make sure it is not sharp or too long. A child may easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips.

• Teach children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they have an emergency or become lost.

“Caldwell’s downtown offers a safe environment for children to walk on Halloween. The merchants are looking forward to continuing this tradition and seeing all the great costumes and getting to know the children and their parents,” stated Cowell.

“Last year’s weather was perfect and most merchants gave away between 500 and 1000 pieces of candy to local children and we’re looking forward to a great turn out this year, especially if the weather holds,” added Frank Della Santi, owner of Flowerland.

The Caldwell Merchants Association was established to promote business in the Caldwell downtown area through special events, seasonal promotions, and other retail-driven methods.
