Fighting the Good Fight

According to statistics from the National Cancer Institute, lung cancer is the leading cancer killer by far—killing more than 160,000 people each year, three times more than any other cancer.  Up to now, less than one in five of those diagnosed survived even five years.  Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women; about 1 out of 4 cancer deaths are from lung cancer. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

“While there have been many encouraging developments in lung cancer research in recent years, the disease remains terribly underfunded,” said Prelude to a Cure founder Claire Mattern. “Per death, lung cancer receives a small fraction of the research dollars devoted to breast, prostate or colon cancer. Prelude To A Cure was founded to address the tremendous shortfall in research funding and to support the search for promising new treatments. Our goal is to give lung cancer patients and their families new hope and, ultimately, more time together.”

“Memorial Sloan Kettering is at the vanguard of research into this dreadful disease and many promising therapeutic approaches to lung cancer have emerged from their laboratories,” Ms. Mattern added. “Prelude to a Cure is proud to support their work.”
