A timely series dealing with how you can be ready for Alzheimer's is being offered in Paramus, from April 13 - 16 at numerous local spots.
Senior Helpers of Bergen County will be hosting a series of presentations to educate the public on issues. All events are free and open to the public.

Dementia and Driving - How To Take Away The Keys

Presented by Michelle Foster-Carter, Alzheimer’s Association & Beth Roland, Kessler Institute For Rehabilitation. This program will describe how cognitive impairment from Alzheimer's disease may affect driving. Caregivers will learn effective strategies to initiate dialogue about driving while being supportive of the person with dementia. Participants will also learn the role of Driver Rehabilitation Specialists in assessing skills and assisting in driving retirement decisions, counseling those who must retire, and finding alternate sources of transportation in their community.

Frustrated Coping with Dementia? - Tools & Techniques to Engage at Home & Hospital
Presented by Mary Dotto, Senior Helpers Bergen County & Mary McGuinness, The Valley Hospital.
This program will offer approaches and tips to help caregivers to be more successful in engaging an individual with dementia. We recognize that dementia can leave the individual more limited both cognitively and physically. These changes can be very frustrating for the caregiver. We will teach you a dementia specific approach geared toward meaningful activities to help both the caregiver and the person with dementia. These tips will help you better manage your loved one both at home and during episodes of hospitalization.

Wandering-High Risk With Dementia
Presented by Vivian Green Korner, Dementia Care Specialist & Representative from Paramus Police Department
65% of individuals with dementia do wander. The implications are serious. This program will help you understand who is at risk for wandering, what are the warning signs to look for, tips to help you prevent wandering and how law enforcement is prepared and available to assist when this does occur.
