Montclair “Stoop Time” Returns for a 5th Year

Posted

The Montclair Health Department will once again partner with Leah Johnston-Rowbotham, MS, APRN, BC to facilitate a Stoop Time group for Montclair residents. Stoop Time is a place for “mature” women to discuss the ups and downs of life throughout its different phases with a small group of others who are experiencing similar changes.

The Department will host one Stoop group which will meet for five weeks on Friday mornings, at 11:00 a.m., beginning June 3 and continuing through July 1. Sessions will be held at the Edgemont Park House, Valley Road, Montclair.

Some women may be experiencing a loss of a significant other, others may have lost a pet, a neighborhood, a job, a familiar home, adult children moving away or other changes in life. Robotham notes that Stoop Time can help one feel less isolated in the happenings of everyday life.

”My own grandmother often discussed these issues on the front stoop while shelling peas; my mother had the stoop by the clothesline as she folded frozen towels and sheets in the late fall,” says Rowbotham. “Baby boomers re-invented their own stoops on the sidelines of little league practices or outside of dance schools.”

Although not listed as an official intervention, it is believed that such a ”stoop” can lessen isolation, increase cognitive activity, preserve memory and lift one’s mood.
