Magnifico Montclair - Osteria Prime Dazzles with Authentic Italian Fare

When you grow up as I did, a second generation Italian in Providence Rhode Island, it’s not that simple to go out and really savor an Italian meal. Let’s face it, growing up in family brimming with gifted Italian cooks, as I did, set the bar quite high. Living in New Jersey, and also being so close to New York City, I’ve also been blessed with some fantastic Italian fare.

But even in Montclair, it’s not so easy to find that authentic, sparkling gem that rocks my world with its spot-on cuisine that is simple, fresh, truly Italian and most of all, sparked with genius. I don’t often write about Italian restaurants here in Montclair, or the area, but when I do, you can bet your dollar it will be about a place that will put a giant smile on your face.

Lucky for me - and you - there is a charming, stellar restaurant here in Montclair that is worthy of great praise: Osteria Prime on Valley Road. You just can’t find a more welcoming, warm, and low key place than this spot. But once you taste your first dish, believe me, you’ll forget where you are - who you are with - and perhaps your name, since the dishes here are so delicious they inhabit you like a dream. Osteria Prime is one of the top Italian restaurants in New Jersey.

When you look at the menu, the very fact that it’s not 20 pages long should clue you in on the fact that this is home made, luscious food that is fresh, made from the very best ingredients and always delicate and fragrant. The lasagna is the best I’ve ever had in my life (sorry Mom!), with its paper thin freshly made layers of pasta filled with just the perfect marriage of meats, cheese, sauce and fresh basil. Wow. I wish I could describe the true taste of this, but if I try, I would call it “a mash up of Naples as a bubbling dish of

comfort food, packed inside many layers of delicate yet firm pasta, obviously hand made and cut, brimming with addictive, scrumptious and yet somehow light combinations of meat and cheese.”

No matter what you order, get an order of this lasagna. We happen to also enjoy the Eggplant, which is really like the native dish of Naples and most of Italy - fresh, light and tender. This is nothing like the eggplant you get in 99 percent of Italian restaurants here in the U.S.

Specials are very creative, with salads boasting fresh goat cheese rolled in blueberries and tossed in a piquant arugula salad with a made-to-order orange vinaigrette and garnisheed with fresh oranges and raspberries. Wow,

Home made pasta is always on the menu, and expect surprising and impressive combinations like fresh tagliatelli with filet mignon in a sherry wine sauce or wonderful Vongoli done just right or any of a handful of specials that your waiter will proudly recite for you and your guests.

To be fair, you just can’t get anything sub-par here. All you will get - no matter what you order - is a dazzling dish worthy of your last meal. It’s mad good and that delicious.

Call ahead for reservations if you can, and revel in the fact that this casual restaurant will disarm you with coziness when you sit down, and rock your world once you taste your very first bite.

Osteria Prime is located at 151 Valley Road in Montclair, N.J. it is open on 7 days a week, for dinner starting at 4 P.M. Reservations are accepted and free parking is on site.
