Literacy Volunteers of America, Essex & Passaic Counties, is pleased to announce that Erik Jacobson, an Associate Professor in the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Literacy Education Department at Montclair State University, will present a lecture on “The State of Adult Illiteracy in New Jersey” and how we as a community can help reduce it.

LVA will host Mr. Jacobson on Tuesday, October 28 from 1–2:30 pm at the Bloomfield Public Library Theatre, 90 Broad Street, Bloomfield, NJ 07003. The program is free and open to the public.

Mr. Jacobson is one of New Jersey’s leading authorities on adult literacy and the author and lead investigator of the state report, “Investing in New Jersey’s Adult Literacy.” His book, “Adult Education in the Age of New Literacies,” addresses the ways adult education has been impacted by changes in technology and explores how learners and teachers can take advantage of newly developing resources.

In Essex and Passaic Counties, one in every four adults is considered functionally illiterate, according to federal statistics.
