Census Bureau Reports 0.48% of Workers Commute by Bike in the New York-Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)

The New York-Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) had 0.48% percent of commuters bike to work, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today in a new brief focused on biking and walking to work. Nationally, 0.6 percent of workers commute by bike.

“Through efforts to increase local transportation options many U.S. cities, have contributed to the increase the number of people who bike to work,” said Brian McKenzie a Census Bureau sociologist who studies commuting. “This information shapes our understanding of how people get to work, and how this may change across cities in the coming years.”

The American Community Survey also provides annual estimates about how commuters in the New York-Newark-Jersey City MSA travel to work and how long it takes them to get there.

Transportation Highlights for the New York-Newark-Jersey City MSA:

• Among the 8,916,438 workers in the New York-Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) 31.9% took public transportation, 0.48% biked, 6.1% walked and 3.9% worked at home. One or more of these estimates may not be statistically different from one another.

• Of workers who did not work from home, the average travel time to work was 34 minutes.

• Traveling by Car, truck, or van was among the most common commute modes.

The New York-Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area is comprised of 24 counties: Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex and Union Counties in NJ; Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Suffolk and Westchester Counties in NY; and Pike County, PA.
