Part 5 of the ongoing Post Office crisis series in TheJerseyTomatoPress.com

Allegations grow, as more postal workers send stories of abuse

Letters from the front lines

Posted

The letters being sent to me are from all over the country, and offer such heartbreaking stories of all kinds of management problems, and alleged abuse. Now, with this letter, another sad tale is being shared.
Last week, after this series about the internal crisis in our Post Offices was made public, and the articles went viral, the management at the first location I wrote about, West Caldwell Post Office, had a meeting to try to see if they could work with their employees on some of the issues.
No updates have been shared yet.
Here is the letter that truly broke my heart. Again, I cannot prove these allegations though many of the post office employees have indeed filed formal and even legal complaints.
Stay tuned - this story is only growing bigger. And, as an optimist, I would like to add: you never know if this kind of public heartache just may help make a positive change.

From Florida (name withheld for now)

Dear Diane,

Your article was bought to my attention and I felt that since your paper is willing to write about the USPS and their mismanagement and illegal activities that maybe you can bring to light to the public the injustices brought upon disabled USPS employees.  On 10/19/2010 I was walked out by my Manager of Operations from the facility where I worked under a program that USPS implemented called the National Reassessment  Program (NRP, is a program that strictly targets injured on the job, disabled employees) stating that there was no work available for me to perform within my medical restrictions.

However for a whole year I was assisting with duties that were still needed. I was assisting the Nixie Clerk (mail that was separated from it's package).  Instead of letting me continue doing this work, the management of the agency decided to place me in a room (Standby Room)  for  8 hours per day 5 days per week doing nothing ( I was by myself this whole time collecting a check while the work that I was assisting with was backing up by at least 3 months old)   I grieved to my Union this injustice of being placed in what amounts to "solitary confinement" and when I did this the Manager ordered a whole bunch of mail to be shredded, this is illegal because of the sanctity of the mail, so as retaliation for my protected Union activities she further made life more miserable by walking me out.

I fought this at the Merit System Protection Board (MSPB) and lost as the whole system is rigged against the employees.  See the following link that discusses the low percentage wins from employees vs agencies (you will be shocked)

I tried reaching out to the UPSP Office of Inspector General (OIG) the law enforcement of the USPS however they are biased as well and for the most part just an extension of the USPS management.  I have attached a link of the MSPB on my case for your review and hope that maybe your paper can get congress/senators to pay attention because I was unable to get any help from my officials when I tried.  The USPS is a very toxic agency to work for and their main purpose in life is to make an employee's life miserable and break them down.  That is why the phase "Going Postal" came about.
