Montclair's most famous son and astronaut Buzz Aldrin,86, who was the second person to walk on the moon, had to be airlifted from the South Pole and flown to New Zealand for medical treatment.

The beloved and intrepid Montclair and international hero was flown from a United States station in the South Pole, McMurdo Station, where the government conducts research, and flown to another United States research base in New Zealand.

Aldrin had been vacationing in the South Pole, and became ill, with fluid in his lungs.

His condition is listed as stable, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

His rescue, however, was not as exhilarating as his walk on the moon. Instead, Aldrin had to be airlifted yesterday on a stretcher alongside his manager,Christina Korp, who said his trip was "grueling".

Today, this Montclair astronaut is all smiles!
